Será realizada no Palácio Itamaraty, em Brasília, entre os dias 19 e 21 de outubro, a XI Conferência Sul-Americana sobre Migrações (CSM). A CSM celebrou sua primeira reunião em 2000, em Buenos Aires, com o apoio da Organização Internacional para as Migrações (OIM), que desde então tem desempenhado as funções de Secretaria Técnica do foro.

A CSM busca promover o intercâmbio de informações e boas práticas na área migratória, bem como desenvolver programas e coordenar políticas sobre a matéria entre seus doze países-membros, de modo a garantir a proteção dos direitos humanos, sociais e trabalhistas dos migrantes e a facilitar a circulação de pessoas no âmbito sul-americano. Durante a X Conferência (Cochabamba, 2010), foram aprovados o Plano Sul-Americano de Desenvolvimento Humano das Migrações e a Declaração de Princípios Migratórios, que constituem os principais textos de referência para os trabalhos da CSM.

Como de costume, a Conferência será precedida, nos dias 18 e 19 de outubro, de reunião de representantes da sociedade civil, cujas conclusões serão encaminhadas à consideração dos participantes da XI CSM.

O Diretor-Geral da OIM, Embaixador William Lacy Swing, participará da XI CSM, que incluirá em sua agenda painel comemorativo dos 60 anos de criação da Organização.

Between 19 and 21 October, the 9th South American Conference on Migration (CSM) will be held at Palácio Itamaraty, in Brasília.  CSM convened for the first time in 2000, in Buenos Aires, with the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which has since then acted as the Technical Secretariat for the forum.

CSM aims at fostering the exchange of information and good practices in the migration area, as well as developing programs and coordinating politics on the issue among its one dozen Member States, with a view to upholding the protection of human, social and labor rights of migrants and to promote the movement of people within the South American continent.  During the 10th Conference (Cochabamba, 2010), the South American Plan for Human Development on Migration and the Declaration of Principles on Migration were approved, which now constitute the reference texts for CSM work. 

As per usual, the Conference will be preceded by a meeting of civil society representatives on 18 and 19 October, whose conclusions will be forwarded to the appraisal of the participants of the 11th CSM.

The IOM Director-General, Ambassador William Lacy Swing, will take part in the 11th CSM, as there will be a celebratory panel on the Organization’s 60th anniversary.
