O Ministro Antonio de Aguiar Patriota mantém reunião de trabalho, em 25 de abril, com a Secretária-Geral-designada da UNASUL, María Emma Mejía. Constam da agenda do encontro as prioridades do Brasil para a Organização no ano de 2011 – em especial em matéria de infraestrutura, combate ao problema mundial das drogas e consolidação institucional – e os planos da Secretária-Geral-designada para seu mandato.

A visita ao Brasil insere-se no contexto de périplo que a Secretária-Geral-designada vem realizando aos países sul-americanos para consultas prévias a sua homologação no cargo, prevista para 9 de maio próximo.

María Emma Mejía, ex-Chanceler da Colômbia, foi indicada para a função pelos Ministros das Relações Exteriores da América do Sul em 11 de março, em reunião no Equador na qual se celebrou a entrada em vigor, naquela data, do Tratado Constitutivo da UNASUL. Na ocasião, foi aprovada fórmula segundo a qual o mandato de dois anos de Secretário-Geral da Organização será dividido, em iguais períodos de um ano, entre a ex-Chanceler Mejía e o Ministro de Energia Elétrica da Venezuela, Alí Rodríguez.

Em Brasília, a Secretária-Geral-designada da UNASUL cumprirá programa de trabalho que inclui, também, encontros com outros interlocutores do Executivo, com parlamentares, com o Secretário-Geral da Organização do Tratado de Cooperação Amazônica (organismo internacional sediado na capital brasileira) e com a Chefe do Escritório no Brasil da Corporação Andina de Fomento. Em seguida, viajará ao Rio de Janeiro, onde manterá contatos com representantes da sociedade civil e, no dia 28 de abril, participará, no Palácio Itamaraty, de reunião do Conselho Sul-Americano de Infraestrutura e Planejamento (COSIPLAN), presidida pela Ministra do Planejamento.

On 25 April, Minister Antonio de Aguiar Patriota and the UNASUR Secretary-General-designate, María Emma Mejía, will hold a working meeting in Brasília. Among the items in the agenda of the meeting are the Brazilian priorities for the Organization in 2011 - particularly infrastructure, fight against the worldwide drug problem and institutional consolidation – and the plans of the Secretary- General-designate for her tenure.

The visit to Brazil is part of a South American tour by the Secretary-General-designate to hold consultations before her confirmation in the position, scheduled for next May 9.

María Emma Mejía, former Foreign Minister of Colombia, was appointed to the position by the South American Ministers of External Relations on 11 March 2011, in a meeting in Ecuador. The meeting also celebrated the entry into force of the UNASUR Constitutive Treaty, which took place that day. On the occasion, they agreed that the two-year tenure of office of UNASUR Secretary-General will be divided into two one-year periods between María Emma Mejía and the Minister of Electric Energy of Venezuela, Alí Rodríguez.

In Brasília, the Secretary-General-designate will have a working agenda that includes meetings with other Brazilian Administration officials, with members of the National Congress, with the Secretary-General of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (an international organization headquartered in Brasília) and the Head of the Brazilian Office of the Corporación Andina de Fomento (CAF). Afterwards, she will travel to Rio de Janeiro, where she will hold meetings with representatives from the civil society. On 28 April, at Palácio Itamaraty, she will attend a meeting of the South American Council for Infrastructure and Planning (COSIPLAN), presided by the Minister of Planning.
