Por ocasião da XL Reunião do Conselho do Mercado Comum (CMC) do Mercosul, realizada em Foz do Iguaçu, em 16 de dezembro de 2010, os Ministros das Relações Exteriores dos Estados Membros do Mercosul mantiveram encontro com Sua Alteza o Xeque Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ministro dos Negócios Estrangeiros dos Emirados Árabes Unidos (EAU).

Os EAU atualmente detêm a presidência rotativa do Conselho Supremo do Conselho de Cooperação do Golfo (CCG). A participação do Xeque Abdullah na Cúpula do Mercosul reflete a cooperação crescentemente próxima entre o CCG e os países da América Latina.

Os Ministros recordaram que a negociação entre os dois blocos foi lançada no contexto da I Cúpula ASPA, realizada em Brasília, em maio de 2005.

Os Ministros reafirmaram o compromisso de criar uma Área de Livre Comércio Mercosul-CCG e recordaram a instrução dos Chefes de Estado e de Governo por ocasião da II Cúpula da ASPA, realizada em Doha, em março de 2009, no sentido de acelerar o ritmo das reuniões, com o intuito de concluir as negociações o mais brevemente possível.

Reconheceram que o processo Mercosul-CCG contribui não só para a criação de oportunidades de comércio para os membros de ambos os blocos, como também para aprofundar as relações entre países árabes e sul-americanos. Os Ministros ressaltaram a importância de se buscar meios adicionais para aprofundar as relações econômicas entre os blocos, ademais das negociações para o livre comércio.

Com estes objetivos em mente, comprometeram-se a explorar soluções criativas para as questões pendentes da negociação de ALC Mercosul-CCG e para avançar a discussão de mecanismos adicionais para aprofundar laços econômicos entre as duas regiões.

During the fortieth meeting of Mercosur’s Common Market Council (CMC), held in Foz do Iguaçu, on 16 December, 2010, the Ministers of External Relations of Mercosur’s Member States met with His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The UAE currently holds the rotating presidency of the Supreme Council of the Gulf Cooperative Council (GCC). The participation of Sheikh Abdullah in the Mercosur summit reflects the increasingly close cooperation between the GCC and Latin American countries.

The Ministers recalled that the negotiations between both blocs were launched during the first Summit of South American-Arab Countries, held in Brasilia, in May, 2005.

The Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to establish a Mercosur-GCC Free Trade Area and recalled the instruction received from their Heads of State and Government during the II Summit of South American-Arab Countries, held in Doha, in March, 2009, to accelerate the pace of meetings, with a view to reaching an early conclusion of the negotiations.

They recognized that the Mercosur-GCC process contributes not only toward the expansion of trade opportunities for both blocs’ members but also to deepen the relations between Arab and South American countries. The Ministers emphasized the importance of pursuing additional routes for deepening economic relations between the two blocs alongside the free trade negotiations.

With these objectives in mind, the Ministers committed themselves to explore creative solutions for pending issues in the Mercosur-GCC Free Trade Agreement negotiations and to further discussion of additional mechanisms for deepening economic ties between the two regions.
