The Brazilian Cooperation Agency of the Ministry of External Relations will send a mission to Afghanistan from 25 to 28 September, 2010. The mission will include representatives of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), of the Santa Catarina State Agricultural Research and Rural Extension Agency (Epagri), of the National Department of Mineral Production (DNPM/MME) and of the Brazilian Gems and Jewellery Association (Agragem).
The mission will seek opportunities for technical cooperation in agriculture, mining and gem cutting and polishing. Besides meeting with Afghan officials and technicians, the Brazilian delegation will hold a meeting with the local office of the United Nations World Food Programme to establish projects in the following areas: strengthening of the Afghan agricultural research institute; development of farming techniques for soya and wheat; dissemination of rural extension techniques; gems extraction and processing and strengthening of the mineral production supervision system.
The Brazilian mission was organized to respond to a request by the Government of Afghanistan. The Basic Agreement on Technical Cooperation between both countries was signed in 2006 and came into force in February this year.
Afghanistan is planning to establish an Embassy in Brasilia, and Brazil will soon open an Embassy in Kabul.
