O Presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva enviou hoje a seguinte mensagem ao Presidente do Chile, Sebastián Piñera, a propósito da operação de resgate dos 33 trabalhadores soterrados na região de Atacama:

“Senhor Presidente, caro amigo,

Acompanhei, com imensa alegria e satisfação, o histórico resgate dos mineiros presos, desde 5 de agosto, na mina de San José. A heróica atitude desses trabalhadores, que resistiram a 69 dias de confinamento a quase 700 metros de profundidade, evidencia a força e a altivez que são a marca do povo chileno. O desfecho positivo da operação de resgate demonstra o empenho pessoal de Vossa Excelência e das equipes envolvidas nessas operações.

Em meu nome e em nome do povo brasileiro, quero transmitir ao prezado amigo, ao povo chileno e, em especial, aos mineiros e a suas famílias, meus mais sinceros votos de alegria e felicidade.

I have been following, with great joy and satisfaction, the historical rescue of the miners trapped since 5 August in the San Jose mine.  The heroic disposition of these workers, who have endured 69 days of confinement nearly 700 meters underground, is a clear display of the strength and pride which are a hallmark of the Chilean people.  The positive outcome of the rescue operation shows your personal effort and that of the teams involved in these operations.
