Será realizado em Salvador, em 19 de novembro de 2011, o Encontro Iberoamericano de Alto Nível em Comemoração ao Ano Internacional dos Afrodescendentes, que foi precedido por debates e mesas redondas com a sociedade civil. Organizado no contexto da proclamação de 2011 como o “Ano Internacional dos Afrodescendentes” pela ONU, trata-se de iniciativa conjunta do Ministério das Relações Exteriores, da Secretaria de Políticas de Promoção da Igualdade Racial, do Governo do Estado da Bahia e da Secretaria-Geral Iberoamericana, e contará com a presença de representantes governamentais e da sociedade civil da América Latina, do Caribe e da África.

De acordo com estimativas do Banco Mundial, do UNICEF e da CEPAL, entre 150 e 200 milhões de habitantes da América Latina e do Caribe são afrodescendentes, correspondendo a aproximadamente 30% a 35% da população regional. No Brasil, de acordo com dados do último Censo de 2010 conduzido pelo IBGE, 97 milhões de pessoas ou 50,7% da população declaram ter ascendência africana.

O Encontro buscará dar maior visibilidade às contribuições sociais, culturais, políticas e econômicas dos afrodescendentes aos países da América Latina e do Caribe; destacar políticas públicas inclusivas e boas práticas; e debater estratégias de inclusão dos afrodescendentes nos diversos contextos nacionais.

O evento oferecerá perspectivas novas de cooperação e de diálogo entre os Estados e a sociedade civil na busca da superação da discriminação de que ainda são vítimas os descendentes dos africanos nas Américas.

No dia 19 de novembro, o Encontro será encerrado com a presença dos Presidentes do Brasil, Cabo Verde, República da Guiné e Uruguai e do Vice-Presidente da Colômbia, além de altas autoridades de países com significativa parcela de sua população oriunda da diáspora africana.

The Ibero-American High Level Meeting to Celebrate the International Year for People of African Descent will be held in Salvador on 19 November 2011. The Meeting was preceded by debates and round tables with the civil society. Organized in the context of the proclamation of 2011 as the “International Year for People of African Descent” by the United Nations, it is a joint initiative by the Ministry of External Relations, by the Secretariat for the Promotion of Racial Equality, by the Government of the State of Bahia and by the Ibero-American General Secretariat, and will be attended by government and civil society representatives from Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa.

According to World Bank, UNICEF and CEPAL estimates, between 150 and 200 million inhabitants of Latin American and the Caribbean are Afro-descendants, which corresponds to approximately 30% to 35% of the regional population. In Brazil, according to the last Census 2010, carried out by IBGE, 97 million people or 50.7% of the population declared themselves Afro-descendants.

The Meeting will seek to increase the visibility of social, cultural, political and economic contributions by Afro-descendants to Latin American and Caribbean countries; highlight inclusive public policies and best practices; and discuss strategies for the inclusion of Afro-descendants in various national contexts.

The Meeting will offer new dialogue and cooperation outlooks for States and the civil society in seeking to overcome the discrimination from which Afro-descendants still suffer in America.

On 19 November, the closing ceremony will be attended by the Presidents of Brazil, Cape Verde, Republic of Guinea and Uruguay and by the Vice-President of Colombia, as well as by high officials from countries with a significant part of the population descending from the African diaspora.
