O Conselho do Mercado Comum (CMC) formalizou hoje, 19 de janeiro, a designação do Embaixador Samuel Pinheiro Guimarães para exercer o cargo de Alto Representante-Geral do Mercosul. O Embaixador Pinheiro Guimarães foi Ministro da Secretaria de Assuntos Estratégicos (SAE) da Presidência da República e Secretário-Geral do Itamaraty. O cargo foi criado na Cúpula de Foz do Iguaçu, em 16 de dezembro de 2010.

O Alto Representante-Geral do Mercosul cumprirá funções de articulação política, formulação de propostas e representação das posições comuns do bloco. Atuará em áreas como saúde, educação, cultura e divulgação do Mercosul. Também coordenará a implementação das metas previstas no Plano de Ação para um Estatuto da Cidadania do Mercosul, aprovado em Foz do Iguaçu em 16 de dezembro de 2010.

Seu mandato será de 3 anos, renovável por igual período uma única vez.

Ambassador Samuel Pinheiro Guimarães appointed High General Representative of the Mercosur

The Common Market Council officially appointed Ambassador Samuel Pinheiro Guimarães to hold the position of High General Representative of the Mercosur. Ambassador Pinheiro Guimarães was Minister of the Secretariat for Strategic Affairs (SAE) of the Presidency of the Republic and Secretary-General of Itamaraty. The position was created in the Foz do Iguaçu Summit, on 16 December 2010.

The High General Representative of Mercosur will be in charge of political articulation, formulation of policies and representation of common positions within the bloc. He will act in areas such as health, education, culture and promotion of Mercosur. He will also coordinate the implementation of the goals provided for in the Action Plan for a Citizenship Statute of Mercosur, approved in Foz do Iguaçu on 16 December 2010.

The High General Representative of Mercosur will have a three-year tenure, to be renewed once for the same period.
