Será realizada amanhã, 19 de agosto, às 15h30, no Palácio Itamaraty, cerimônia para celebrar o Dia Mundial de Ação Humanitária. Na ocasião, o Ministro Celso Amorim receberá carta remetida pelo Alto Comissário das Nações Unidas para Refugiados (ACNUR), António Guterres, em reconhecimento à importância das doações feitas este ano pelo Brasil ao Alto Comissariado. Fará entrega da carta o Representante do ACNUR no Brasil, Andres Ramirez. Também participará do evento o Coordenador-Residente interino do Sistema ONU no Brasil, Vincent Defourny.

Comemorado no dia 19 de agosto, o Dia Mundial da Ação Humanitária foi estabelecido em dezembro de 2008 pela Assembléia Geral das Nações Unidas. A data faz referência ao atentado contra a sede da ONU em Bagdá, que vitimou 22 pessoas, entre elas o brasileiro Sérgio Vieira de Mello. O Dia Mundial da Ação Humanitária tem o objetivo de dar visibilidade aos desafios e às necessidades humanitárias em todo o mundo, como também aos riscos enfrentados pelos profissionais que se dedicam a essa atividade. Ao final da cerimônia, serão divulgados números recentes sobre a segurança dos trabalhadores humanitários no mundo, produzidos pelo Escritório de Coordenação de Assuntos Humanitários das Nações Unidas (OCHA).

On 19 August 2010, at 15h30, a ceremony will be held at Palácio Itamaraty to celebrate the World Humanitarian Day. On the occasion, Minister Celso Amorim will receive a letter sent by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), António Guterres, in recognition of the importance of the donations Brazil has made this year to the Office of the High Commissioner. The letter will be delivered by the UNHCR’s Representative in Brazil, Andres Ramirez. The ceremony will also be attended by the Acting Resident Coordinator of the UN System in Brazil, Vincent Defourny.

Celebrated on 19 August, the World Humanitarian Day was established on December 2008 by the United Nations General Assembly. The date marks the attack against the UN Headquarters in Bagdad, which victimized 22 people, among whom Sérgio Vieira de Mello, from Brazil. The World Humanitarian Day aims at highlighting humanitarian challenges and needs around the world, as well as the risks faced by professionals in the area. At the end of the ceremony, updated figures on the security of humanitarian aid workers in the world, organized by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) of the United Nations, will be released.
