O Governo brasileiro oficializou hoje, 21 de janeiro, na sede da Organização das Nações Unidas para a Alimentação e a Agricultura (FAO), a candidatura do Professor José Graziano da Silva ao cargo de Diretor-Geral da Organização, no período 2012-2015. A eleição ocorrerá durante a 37ª Sessão da Conferência da FAO, a realizar-se de 25 de junho a 2 de julho, em Roma.

Com a entrega da documentação exigida, o Brasil confirmou o anúncio da candidatura feito em novembro pelo ex-Presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, em seu nome e da então Presidenta eleita Dilma Rousseff, durante a Cúpula de Chefes de Estado e de Governo da UNASUL.

A candidatura sobressai diante do êxito do Brasil no domínio agrícola em suas várias vertentes, desde a produção e a pesquisa e, sobretudo, no combate à fome, na promoção da segurança alimentar e do desenvolvimento com inclusão social.

O Brasil reitera a convicção de que o Professor Graziano da Silva reúne importantes qualificações para o exercício da função de Diretor-Geral da FAO, em especial:
(a) credenciais acadêmicas sólidas, em temática afeta à FAO;
(b) credenciais políticas e administrativas, testadas e ampliadas no exercício da função ministerial, como Ministro Extraordinário para Segurança Alimentar e Combate à Fome, encarregado pelo ex-Presidente Lula da implantação do programa Fome Zero; e
(c) conhecimento da FAO, seus mecanismos e potencialidades, acumulado ao longo dos quatro anos em que exerceu a Direção do Escritório Regional da FAO para a América Latina e o Caribe.

O candidato aprofundará o processo de reforma e fortalecimento da Organização, de forma a tornar ainda mais relevante sua contribuição à erradicação da fome e ao desenvolvimento econômico e social mundial.

 Brazilian Candidate to FAO Director-General
 
On 21 January 2010, at the FAO Headquarters, the Brazilian Government officially submitted the nomination of Professor José Graziano da Silva for Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization, for the 2012-2015 tenure.  The election will take place during the 37th Session of the FAO Conference, to be held from 25 June to 2 July, in Rome.
 
Having submitted the required documentation, Brazil confirms the announcement of the nomination made last November by former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on his behalf as well as that of then President-elect Dilma Rousseff, during the UNASUR Summit of Heads of State and Government.
 
His nomination is relevant in light of Brazil’s success in the agricultural domain in its many forms, from production to research and especially in the fight against hunger, in fostering food security and development with social inclusion.
 
Brazil reaffirms its conviction that Professor Graziano da Silva possesses important qualities to carry out the duties of FAO Director-General, in particular:
(a) solid academic credentials in an area pertaining to the FAO;
(b) political and administrative credentials, tested and expanded under his tenure as Extraordinary Minister for Food Security and Fight Against Hunger, when he was put in charge of implementing the Zero Hunger program by former President Lula; and
(c) knowledge of the FAO, its mechanisms and potential strengths, which he accumulated along the four years he held thee post of FAO Regional Representative for Latin American and the Caribbean.
 
The candidate will further the reform and strengthening process in the Organization, so as to increase the relevant contribution to eradicating hunger and to global social and economic development.
