State of Eritrea

Brazil and Eritrea established diplomatic relations in 1996. The first visit of an Eritrean authority to Brazil happened in February, 2010, when the Minister of Mines and Energy, Ahmed Haji, went to in Brasília as the bearer of letter from President Isaias Afwerki to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

In May, 2010, the Eritrean Minister of Agriculture, Arefaine Behre, participated in the Brazil-Africa Dialogue on Food Security, Fight against Hunger and Rural Development in Brasília.

In 2011, in new visit to Brazil, Minister Behre presented to the Brazilian government the position of his country on the situation in the Horn of Africa. The regime of sanctions adopted by the United Nations Security Council against Eritrea was also addressed.

Since Brazil does not have resident Embassy in the country, bilateral relations are cumulatively followed by the Embassy of Brazil in Cairo (Egypt).

Chronology of Bilateral Relations

2006 – The first Eritrean exports to Brazil are registered.

2010 – Visit to Brazil of the Minister of Mines and Energy of Eritrea, Ahmed Haji, as bearer of letter from President Isaias Afwerki to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (February).

2010 – In May, 2010, the Eritrean Minister of Agriculture, Arefaine Behre, participated in the Brazil-Africa Dialogue on Food Security, Fight against Hunger and Rural Development, in Brasília.

2011 – Visit to Brazil of the Eritrean Minister of Agriculture, Arefaine Behre, when he is received by authorities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to present the position of his country about the situation in the region of the Horn of Africa. The regime of sanctions adopted by the United Nations Security Council against Eritrea was also addressed.
