Arab Republic of Egypt

egito
Established in 1924, diplomatic relations between Brazil and Egypt gained momentum after the instauration of the Republic of Egypt (1953). The legal framework that allowed for initiatives of bilateral cooperation as well as the strengthening of the political dialogue and intensification of commercial flows was established from the 1960’s on.

The visit of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to Cairo (December 2003) raised the bilateral relations to new levels. It was de first visit of a Brazilian Head of State to Egypt since D.Pedro II's voyage to the Middle East, 127 years earlier. After President Lula´s visit, several ministerial meetings followed, the most recent of which was the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio de Aguiar Patriota to Cairo in 2011. The visit of President Mohamed Morsi (May 2013) to Brazil was the first visit of an Egyptian Head of State to the country.

In 2009, Brazil and Egypt established a bilateral strategic dialogue mechanism. The multidimensional nature of the geopolitical insertion of Egypt (in the Middle East, the Arab world, Africa and in the Mediterranean space) makes it an interlocutor of particular relevance.

In 2010, Egypt became the second extra-regional partner to sign a Free Trade Agreement with MERCOSUR. Egypt is the main destination of Brazilian exports to Africa.
