Republic of Uganda


Brazil and Uganda established diplomatic relations in 1970. The Brazilian Embassy in Nairobi (Kenya) is concurrently accredited to Uganda. The Embassy of Uganda in Washington (United States) is concurrently accredited to Brazil.

President Yoweri Museveni has been to Brazil three times, always in the context of major international conferences. He led the Ugandan delegation to the Rio-92 Earth Summit (1992), to the 11th UNCTAD Conference (2004), and to the UN-Habitat 5th World Urban Forum (2010).

Chronology of Bilateral Relations

1970 – Establishment of diplomatic relations

1984 – The Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives of Uganda, Yona Kanyomozi, visits Brazil

1992 – President Yoweri Museveni visits Brazil to participate in the Rio Conference on the Environment, the ‘Rio-92 Earth Summit’

2004 - President Yoweri Museveni visits Brazil to participate in the 11th UNCTAD Conference, in São Paulo

2008 – Visit to Uganda of a technical mission composed of specialists from EMBRAPA and the Interuniversity Network for the development of the Sugar and Alcohol Sector (RIDESA)

2009 –Study Mission of technical representatives of the Governments of Uganda and Rwanda to Brazil to exchange experiences in biofuels, organized by the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC)

2009 –Mission of Uganda’s Parliamentary Committee of Presidential Affairs visits Brazil to learn about the Brazilian legal and institutional framework related to the treatment to complainants of corruption

2010 – President Yoweri Museveni visits Brazil to participate in the UN-Habitat 5th World Urban Forum, in Rio de Janeiro

2010 – Uganda’s Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Hope Mwesigye, participates in the Brazil-Africa Dialogue on Food Security

2010 – The ‘Pro-Renova’ Seminar is held in Uganda, aimed at divulging the Brazilian biofuels technology

2011 –Basic Agreement on Technical and Scientific Cooperation is signed

2012 –High level mission of studies from Uganda visits Brazil, seeking to know the policies adopted for the implementation of social protection services

2012– The Minister of Environment of Uganda, Flavia Munaaba, leads  the Ugandan delegation to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20 Earth Summit)
