Kingdom of Tonga

Tonga is a sovereign state of Oceania. Between 1900 and 1970, it was under the British protectorate. In 1970, Tonga withdrew from the protectorate and became part of the Commonwealth. The country is a parliamentary monarchy. The priority of its foreign policy is to facilitate trade and assistance to development. As a member of the Pacific Islands Forum, Tonga has an influential role in regional themes, such as sports, fishing and telecommunications.

Tonga was the last member country of the United Nations with whom Brazil established diplomatic relations, in December 2011. Brazil and Tonga share similar views on important themes on the international agenda, such as the environment and climate change, agricultural cooperation within the scope of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), energy and food security, disarmament and non-proliferation, sustainable development and Law of the Sea.
