Federated States of Micronesia
The Federated States of Micronesia became independent in 1986, under the Compact of Free Association with the United States of America. The Compact secures its defense, foreign policy and financial support. The national Constitution establishes a Presidential Republic according to the American model (although with a unicameral parliament), and a federation composed of 4 states that covers approximately 607 small islands.
Micronesia established diplomatic relations with Brazil in October 2010. The Micronesian government has showed particular interest in two areas of cooperation with Brazil: projects with EMBRAPA for the development of the country’s subsistence agriculture; and the possibility of opening a vacancy for the diplomatic training of a Micronesian diplomat at Instituto Rio Branco. Bilateral trade is still very small and, historically, the balance has always shown a surplus to Brazil. There is no information about the number of Brazilians living in the Federated States of Micronesia.
