Grand Duchy of Luxembourg
Diplomatic relations between Brazil and Luxembourg were established in 1911. Despite not having a large territory and population, the partnership with Luxembourg is significant to Brazil – both for its relevant role in the articulation of positions within the European Union and for the presence of significant Portuguese speaking community (about 16% of the Luxembourg's population is of Portuguese origin).
At the multilateral level, Brazil and Luxembourg keep close positions in themes such as human rights, self-determination of peoples, non-intervention, peaceful conflict resolution, cooperation and respect to decisions adopted in international fora. The two countries cooperate in initiatives directed at the eradication of terrorism and drug trafficking, at the combat against nuclear proliferation, at the expansion and liberalization of international trade and the reduction of protectionism.
Luxembourg has, in several opportunities, supported Brazilian candidatures in international organisms.
Grand Duke Henri visited Brazil in 2007 and in 2012 – at this date, on the occasion of the Rio+20 Earth Summit. As a member of the International Olympic Committee, he participated in the election of Rio de Janeiro to host the 2016 Olympic Games.
Although modest, bilateral trade has experienced rapid growth. Trade flow reached US$ 123 million in 2012, with US$ 73 million in Brazilian exports. Luxembourg is also the gateway to Brazilian products in other European markets.
The stock of Luxembourg investments in Brazil is over US$ 13.73 billion (the 13th largest foreign investor), with highlight to the iron and steel sector. The facility to contact the Luxembourg market represents an important advantage for Brazilian companies, which can benefit from the access to important decision-making centers in the Grand Duchy.
