Lao People's Democratic Republic
Brazil and Laos established diplomatic relations in 1995. The Brazilian Embassy in Bangkok (Thailand) is cumulatively responsible for assisting Brazilians who are in Laos and representing Brazil before the authorities of that country. The process of intensification of relations between Brazil and ASEAN has contributed to deepen bilateral partnerships.
Laos is interested in receiving Brazilian cooperation in areas such as fight against hunger, maternal and child nutrition, agriculture, biofuels, hydroelectricity, sports and health. Together with India and South Africa, Brazil also provides cooperation to the country through the IBSA Fund. Launched in June 2012, the project aims to benefit agricultural irrigation, which includes the construction of sluice for the management of the San River Basin (Nam Xan).
Bilateral trade is still modest, having registered a peak of US$ 2.9 million in 2011. There is potential for Brazilian investments in areas such as mining, food, agriculture, tourism and ethanol. Laos has significant hydropower potential and has sought to attract foreign investment in this sector.
