Republic of Indonesia

Established in 1953, relations between Brazil and Indonesia have been boosted in recent years, particularly after the exchange of presidential visits in 2008, when the Strategic Partnership between the two countries was signed – Brazil's only in Southeast Asia. The countries' relationship has benefited from affinities in several aspects: political convergent evolution (strengthening of democracy); similiarities regarding geographical (large territories with important biodiversity), human (large and multiethnic population) and social (challenge of overcoming inequalities) aspects.

The Plan of Action of the Strategic Partnership (2009) has given well-defined contours to the approximation between the two countries, including in the bilateral agenda issues such as renewable energies; defense; mining; social inclusion policies; academic and educational cooperation; scientific and technological cooperation; and themes at plurilateral and multilateral levels.

Brazil and Indonesia maintain several regular dialogue mechanisms:

  • Political Consultations (the sixth meeting was held in Brasilia in 2013);
  • Joint Commission (the second meeting was held in 2011);
  • Consultative Committee on Agriculture;
  • Working Group on Trade and Investment (the second meeting was held in 2013);
  • Academic Forum;
  • Bilateral Group on Economic and Social Issues.

In September 2012, on the sidelines of the 67th UN General Assembly, President Dilma Rousseff met with the President of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Memoranda of understanding in education, poverty eradication, agriculture, energy, ethanol production, and promotion of trade and investment are in force. In addition, Brazil and Indonesia have been developing, in recent years, an important partnership in defense, especially with sales of Super Tucano aircrafts and rocket launchers.

Since 2006 the Brazilian company Vale has had significant presence in the mining and processing of nickel in Indonesia, in the province of South Sulawesi. This represents one of the largest Brazilian investments in Asia and one of the largest foreign investments in Indonesia.

In 2015, two Brazilian nationals were executed in Indonesia for drug trafficking, despite great efforts undertaken by the Brazilian Government and international human rights organizations.
