Republic of Côte d'Ivoire

Brazil recognized the independence of Côte d'Ivoire in 1960. The Embassy of Brazil in Abidjan was opened in 1969 and the Embassy of Côte d'Ivoire in Brasilia was installed in 1971. From the 1980s on, due to the economic crisis that affected both countries and the outbreak of military conflicts in the African country, bilateral relations experienced some distance - the last meeting of the Joint Commission between the two countries was held in 1987. Notwithstanding, Brazil kept its diplomatic mission in Abidjan open, even in the most dramatic moments of the Ivorian political crises.

The overcoming of the Ivorian post-election crisis of 2010-2011 led to the resumption of bilateral cooperation initiatives. The Brazilian Cooperation Agency led a technical mission to the African country in 2011 and several high-level Ivorian authorities visited Brazil – for instance, Foreign Minister Charles Koffi Diby visited Brasilia in 2014, when he was received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luiz Alberto Figueiredo Machado.
