Republic of the Congo

Diplomatic relations between Brazil and the Republic of the Congo were established in 1980. In 1982, Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso visited Brazil. Two years later, the 1st meeting of the Brazil- Republic of the Congo Joint Commission was held. For almost twenty years there were no exchange of visits or bilateral meetings, due to the internal situation in that African country. In July 2005, President Sassou Nguesso's second visit to Brazil marked the rapprochement between the two countries. In October 2007, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva visited the Republic of the Congo – the first visit of a Brazilian Head of State to that country.

Brazil and the Republic of the Congo have a Framework Agreement on Technical Cooperation, in force since 1986. Cooperation initiatives began to progress in 2007, when agreements were signed to implement bilateral partnerships in areas such as health and agriculture.
