Republic of Singapore
Brazil and Singapore established diplomatic relations in 1967, and the Embassy of Brazil was established in 1979. In 2013, on the occasion of visit to Brazil of the Foreign Minister of Singapore, K Shanmugam, the Embassy of Singapore in Brasília was inaugurated, the only resident diplomatic mission of Singapore in Latin America. The two countries count on two regular dialogue mechanisms: Political Consultation Meetings and the Joint Committee on Promoting Trade and Investments. In addition, the Brazil-Singapore Parliamentary Group was created in September 2014.
Originally focused on trade issues, the bilateral agenda was expanded and now includes partnerships in shipbuilding, port and airport logistics, education, science, technology, and innovation.
Singaporean companies have significant presence in Brazil, particularly in the areas of information technology, fine chemicals, and petroleum. Together with South Korea, Singapore owns the most advanced technology in the production of equipment for oil exploitation in deep waters.
There is potential for bilateral cooperation in the management of port and airport infrastructure, since Singapore is a world reference in such areas. A Singaporean company is building a shipyard in Aracruz (ES), and a consortium with a Singaporean company will undertake part of the administration of the Galeão Airport (RJ).
More than ten Brazilian companies have subsidiaries in Singapore. In 2013, bilateral trade registered USD 2.99 billion.
