People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria

Brazil and Algeria established diplomatic relations in 1962, when the Embassy of Brazil in Algiers was installed. In 2002, the end of the civil war in Algeria allowed the deepening of partnerships for bilateral cooperation and the increase of commercial flows.

In 2005, the President of Algeria, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, visited Brazil in the occasion of the First Summit of South American and Arab Countries (ASPA). As rotating president of the League of Arab States, President Bouteflika co-headed the meeting along with former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. After the summit, President Bouteflika stayed in Brazil for a Statevisit.

President Lula reciprocated the visit in 2006. In the same year, the Algerian Foreign Minister, Mohamed Bedjaoui visited Brazil, occasion when the Joint Commission, which had not met since 1987, was resumed. In 2008, the Brazilian Foreign Minister at the time, Celso Amorim, made an official visit to Algeria.

Since 2010, Brazil and Algeria have a Strategic Dialogue Mechanism, intended to promote comprehensive assessment of the bilateral relations and exchange views on regional themes and issues of global interest.
