Sovereign and Military Order of Malta
Brazil recognized the international status of the Sovereign and Military Order of Malta in December 1951, and diplomatic relations were established with the creation of a Legation of the Order of Malta in Rio de Janeiro and a Legation of Brazil to the Order of Malta, in Rome.
In 1966, the Order of Malta expressed the wish to have the rank of its diplomatic representation raised to the status of embassy, a wish that was welcomed by the Brazilian Government. The theme was the main subject of the official visit of the Grand Master of the Order to Brazil, in June 1966, as well as of the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil to the Grand Master in September of the same year.
The Grand Master visited Brazil again in 1984 and in 1990, carrying out an official protocol program, an aspect that has characterized relations between Brazil and the Order.
