United Arab Emirates
Relations between Brazil and the UAE were formally established in 1974. The Embassy of Brazil in Abu Dhabi was installed in 1978. In 1991, the Emirates installed their Embassy in Brasília, the first in Latin America.
From 2000 on, bilateral relations have evolved rapidly both in their economic and political aspects, a process driven by the high density of official visits from both parties (including at the highest hierarchical levels). In December 2003, President Lula officially visited the UAE with a delegation of businessmen and government officials. Vice-President Michel Temer visited the UAE in 2013, leading of a large business delegation. In 2014, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashed Al Maktoum (Vice-President, Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of the UAE and Emir of Dubai) visited Brazil and signed a cooperation agreement in the field of defense, the first of this kind signed by Brazil with a middle eastern country.
The UAE are currently an important trading post, a logistics hub and a business center. Today, approximately 30 Brazilian companies have commercial offices in the country, using it as an export platform in the region. The Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (APEX-Brazil) keeps an office in Jebel Ali (a free-trade zone of Dubai) to assist Brazilian companies wishing to establish themselves in the Emirates.
Trade between Brazil and the UAE has experienced continuous and expressive growth in this period. From 2008 on, the UAE became the second largest middle eastern partner of Brazil in terms of amount of bilateral exchange, after Saudi Arabia. Total trade with the UAE, which in 2000 amounted to US$ 300 million, reached US$ 3 billion in 2015, with a Brazilian surplus of around US$ 2 billion. Bilateral investments have also been playing an increasingly important role, boosting the development of both countries. The stock of emirate investments in Brazil is approximately US $ 5 billion.
