Republic of Trinidad and Tobago


In 2015, Brazil and Trinidad and Tobago celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations. In recent years, the visits and high-level meetings reflect the raprochement in bilateral relations. The then Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar visited Brazil in 2011, when she met with then Foreign Minister, Antonio Patriota, and with the President of the Republic, Dilma Rousseff, on the occasion of the Cartagena Summit, in April 2012, and during the final of the football World Cup, in 2014.

In 2015, the first direct flight between Brazil and Trinidad and Tobago was inaugurated. There are ongoing negotiations with a view to the adaptation of the Air Services Agreement signed between the two countries in 2008.

In the framework of humanitarian cooperation, the Brazilian Government donated 20,000 doses of influenza vaccine (trivalent H1N1) to Trinidad and Tobago, in February 2016.

Chronology of Bilateral Relations

1942 – Creation of the Vice Consulate of Brazil in Port-of-Spain, capital of Trinidad and Tobago

1965 – Creation of the Embassy of Brazil in Trinidad and Tobago

2008 – Visit of the then Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago to Brazil. Four agreements are signed, among them the Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation in the Energy Field

2008 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago participates in the First Summit of Latin America and the Caribbean on Integration and Development (CALC) in Costa do Sauipe-BA

2009 – Visit of the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago to Brazil, in the context of the preparation for the Summit of the Americas

2009 – President Lula and Foreign Minister Celso Amorim visit Trinidad and Tobago on the occasion of the Summit of the Americas

2010 – Trinidad and Tobago participates in the First Brazil-Caribbean Community Summit (CARICOM)

2011 – The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago visits Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro

2012 – The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago meets with President Dilma Rousseff, during the Summit of Cartagena, Colombia

2013 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Patriota, visits Port-of-Spain (May 16)
