Republic of Suriname
Brazilian cooperation with Suriname began shortly after the country's Independence, in 1975. Brazil is seen as a priority partner for Suriname. Currently many projects and initiatives are being implemented in areas as diverse as health (prevention of syphilis, HIV/AIDS and Chagas disease), agriculture (cassava production, food processing) training in the repression of organized crime, defense and diplomatic personnel training. In April 2004 a “Partial Scope Agreement” on the granting of tariff preferences for rice trade between Brazil and Suriname was signed. In 2012, Guyana joined MERCOSUR as an Associated State.
It is estimated that about 35 thousand Brazilians live in Suriname (approximately 8% of the population) most of whom devoted to activities of mineral exploration. The treatment of the subject in the Working Group on Migration and Consular Affairs, crated in 2011, provided the development of the progressive legalization project of Brazilian miners in Suriname.
Brazil supported the Presidency pro tempore of Suriname at UNASUR (August 2013 to December 2014). Moreover, the two countries share a seat on the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
