The Summit of Heads of State of MERCOSUR and Associated States will be held in Brasília, on 7 December. The meeting will be preceded by the 44th Meeting of the Common Market Council, on 6 December.
The Social Summit and the MERCOSUR Business Forum will be held parallel to those events, also in Brasília. Between 4 and 6 December, the Social Summit will provide a venue for debate on citizen integration within the bloc, with special attention to labor, education and health. With the goal of encouraging closer ties between the business communities of the member States, the Business Forum will center its debates around infrastructure and logistics, agribusiness, energy and innovation.
Founded in 1991, MERCOSUR allowed for a significant increase in trade flows among the State parties. In 1990, exports among the founding members of the bloc reached US$ 4.1 billion; in 2011, they reached US$ 60.6 billion. With the entry of Venezuela, in August 2012, the bloc established itself as a world-level energy power, comprising major oil, shale and natural gas reserves.
Brazil's Pro Tempore Presidency elected as the main axis of its actions the combined management of science, technology, productive innovation and training issues. At the end of the Summit, the Pro Tempore Presidency of the bloc will rotate to Uruguay.
