The 12th BASIC Ministerial Meeting will take place on September 20 and 21 at Itamaraty Palace, providing a venue for coordination between Brazil, South Africa, India and China on the ongoing negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its Kyoto Protocol. The event will begin with technical and negotiation meetings, on September 20. The ministerial meeting, on September 21, will be co-chaired by the Minister of Environment, Izabella Teixeira, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio de Aguiar Patriota.
The debates at the 12th BASIC Ministerial Meeting will provide an opportunity to seek a common approach on substantial issues on international negotiations, with a view to the next Conference of the Parts of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to be held in Doha, Qatar, in November and December of 2012.
BASIC was created in 2007, as an informal group for dialogue within UNFCCC negotiations. Since its creation, the Group has played a major role in building consensus around the climate chance regime and in the outline of an effective and equitable global response to global warming. The coordination actions of BASIC has encouraged a greater level of ambition in the fight against climate change and contributed to the address of financial, technological and technical international support for mitigation and adaptation actions in developing countries.
