The escalation of violence and the repression against demonstrators in Egypt represent a serious degradation of the security situation in a key-country for the stability in the region.
Brazil associates itself with the statements made by the Secretary-General of the United Nations in the sense that violence and incitement are not answers to the challenges Egypt faces. Brazil equally shares the views of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union according to which a constructive dialogue between the parties is essential to ensure the long-term stability of Egypt.
The Brazilian government condemns the brutality of the repression in Egypt and calls for dialogue and conciliation so that the legitimate aspirations of the Egyptian people for freedom, democracy and prosperity, expressed in the January 25th Revolution, be achieved without violence, with respect for human rights and with the return of the democratic order to full force.
The Embassy of Brazil in Cairo is attentive to the situation of the Brazilian community in Egypt and warns over insecurity in the country.
