The Brazilian Government welcomes the decision of the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic to accede to the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (CWC) and to apply it immediately. As one of the original signatories of the Convention, Brazil expects the accession of Syria to the CWC to boost the universalization of this instrument and lead to the achievement of the goal of a world free of all chemical weapons.
Brazil also welcomes the agreement reached by the United States and Russia on the disposal of Syria's chemical weapons.
The Brazilian Government is confident that these measures will contribute significantly to giving new impetus to the search for a negotiated solution to meet the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian society. In this sense, Brazil reiterates its unequivocal support for the Joint Special Representative of the United Nations and the League of Arab States for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, and for the holding of a new international conference on Syria, to whose success it remains ready to contribute.
