The Brazilian Government has learned, with satisfaction, the decision of the United Nations Secretary-General to hold the II International Conference on Syria (Geneva II) in Geneva, on January 22, 2014.
The Brazilian Government reiterates that there is no military solution to the Syrian conflict. In this regard, it expresses its unequivocal support and permanent willingness to contribute to the full success of the long-awaited Geneva II Conference on Syria. The Conference should promote an inter-Syrian dialogue and contribute to the definitive end of violence and to a political agreement between the Government and the opposition in the country which fully meets the legitimate aspirations of the local society, in accordance with the Geneva Action Group communiqué dated June 30, 2012.
Brazil reaffirms its full support for the work carried out by the United Nations and Arab League Special Representative, Lakhdar Brahimi, and the Human Rights Council International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, presided over by Professor Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro.
