The Brazilian Government welcomes the selection of Brasilia by the World Water Council (WWC), on February 26, 2014, to host the 8th World Water Forum (WWF) in 2018. The WWF is today the primary forum for international dialogue between different sectors involved in the discussion of water resources, with broad participation of civil society.
Brasília's candidacy was promoted by the Federal Government and the Federal District Government (GDF). The Forum is held every three years. In its latest edition, in Marseille in 2012, it gathered 35,000 people from over 140 countries. The next edition will take place in the city of Daegu, South Korea, in 2015. In addition to thematic discussions, the event also features an exhibition aimed at the general public, and opens up business opportunities for companies in the sector.
Brasilia's selection to host the World Water Forum reflects the recognition of the country's important role on the treatment of the subject in the international arena. The 8th WWF, to be held in March 2018, will provide a forum to promote broad discussion on the challenges and opportunities related to the water issue at the national and international levels.
