The Brazilian Government notes with satisfaction the re-election of Luis Almagro as Secretary General of the Organization of American States, for a five-year term (2020-2025). Secretary General Almagro was re-elected with 23 of the 33 votes cast, in the election held today in Washington during the 54th Special General Assembly of the OAS.
Luis Almagro is a Uruguayan diplomat and politician, with solid knowledge and proven experience in hemispheric issues. During his first term as Secretary General (2015-2020), he played a key role in promoting democracy on the continent.
Brazil has supported the candidacy of Almagro since the beginning of President Jair Bolsonaro's administration.
The Brazilian Government takes this opportunity to reaffirm its willingness to continue to work, in close cooperation with the OAS General Secretariat, to promote the defense of democracy, security, human rights and development in the Americas.
