Brazil is following closely the events in Paraguay that involve the process of "political trial" against President Mario Abdo Benítez.
While reiterating full respect for Paraguay's constitutional process, Brazil trusts that the process will be conducted without breaking the democratic order, in compliance with Paraguay's commitments under the Mercosur Democratic Clause - Ushuaia Protocol.
The Brazilian Government recognizes the excellent relationship between Brazil and Paraguay during the Governments of Presidents Mario Abdo and Jair Bolsonaro, with initiatives of great positive impact for Paraguay in the economic, physical integration and public security areas. It also underscores the full convergence of values between the two Governments with regard to the promotion of democracy in the region and the protection of family rights. This unprecedented elevation of Brazil-Paraguay relations is due, more than anything else, to the excellent personal relationship between Presidents Mario Abdo and Jair Bolsonaro, the convergence of strategic views and their determination to work together for the benefit of their peoples.
Brazil hopes that this cooperation with President Mario Abdo will continue, which will allow for the full implementation of ongoing initiatives and ensuing advances, including the implementation of commitments under the Itaipu Treaty for the mutual benefit of the two countries.
Paraguay’s development and its active participation as a valuable member of Mercosur and the hemispheric community is of enormous interest to Brazil, and the Brazilian Government is convinced that President Mario Abdo is in a position to continue conducting this project.
