The president of the Republic signed on 6/25/2019 the instrument of Brazil’s accession to the Protocol relating to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks following approval of the agreement by the Brazilian Federal Senate.

The Protocol will come into effect at the international level 90 days after the deposit of the accession instrument at the Geneva-based World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and should be promulgated internally within the same period.

With Brazil’s accession to the Protocol of Madrid, Brazilian entrepreneurs will be able to register their trademarks in 102 signatory countries to the agreement, by submitting documentation in Brazil only, at the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI).

The Madrid Protocol will thus considerably simplify the procedure for registering trademarks in member countries,  reducing costs and bureaucracy.
