The 12th Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), with the participation of President Michel Temer, will be held on 17 and 18 July in Sal Island, Cape Verde. The meeting will be preceded, on July 16, by the XXIII Ordinary Meeting of the Council of Ministers of the CPLP, with the participation of Minister Aloysio Nunes Ferreira.
The XII Summit will mark the handover of the rotating presidency of the CPLP from Brazil to Cape Verde. The Brazilian presidency began on November 1, 2016, with the theme "The CPLP and the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development". In the period 2016-2018 Brazil presided over thirteen CPLP ministerial meetings and several meetings of CPLP technicians and authorities in the areas of health, education, culture, digital government, environment, among others.
Created in 1996, CPLP has three central objectives, which count on full Brazilian engagement: political-diplomatic coordination, broad cooperation among its members and the promotion and dissemination of the Portuguese language. The CPLP has been a frequent source of support for Brazil's positions and candidacies in international forums. Since 2006, Brazil has had specific diplomatic representation with the CPLP in Lisbon, as well as resident Embassies in all countries of the Community.
