The Brazilian Government welcomes the approval, on August 9, by the United Nations General Assembly, by acclamation, of the appointment of Ms. Michelle Bachelet as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Bachelet will take office on September 1 and is recognized for her experience in the field of human rights.
She was the first executive director of UN Women, an organization in which she was committed to advancing the theme of gender equality. She served as president of Chile over two terms. Drawing on her training as a pediatrician, she also leads an international alliance for maternal and children’s health.
The Brazilian government relies on Michelle Bachelet's ability to address the challenges facing the international human rights system and lends its full support to the successful fulfillment of her mandate as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
