The Permanent Delegation of Brazil in Geneva has learned, without any prior notice or request for information, of the Human Rights Committee’s deliberation regarding a candidacy in the forthcoming Brazilian elections.
The Committee, responsible for monitoring the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, is comprised of experts who serve in their personal capacity, rather than as country representatives.
Conclusions presented by the Committee are recommendations, with no legally binding effect.
The contents of this deliberation by the Committee will now be submitted to the Judiciary.
Brazil complies strictly with the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The principles of legal equality, respect for the due process of law and full rights to defense and appeal laid down therein are also principles of the Brazilian Constitution, enforced by the Judiciary with utmost zeal and independence.
