The Brazilian Government congratulates the Government and the people of Iraq on the recapture of Mosul, announced on July 10 by Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi. This victory is a result of a heroic and determined effort and represents a milestone in the fight against the self-styled "Islamic State" and international terrorism.
The liberation of Mosul, the second largest Iraqi city and a cultural and economic center in northern Iraq, is also an essential step in the consolidation of security, stability and territorial integrity of the country. Brazil hopes that it will be followed by a successful process of reconstruction and economic recovery. Brazil also hopes that the current successes will enable the full development of the Iraqi people in the context of a renewed conciliation between the groups that make up the diverse Iraqi society.
