The President of the Republic, Michel Temer, is travelling to Portugal to attend the funeral of former President Mários Soares, who died on January 7th, 2017. The ceremony will take place on January 10th, at 1 pm, at the Jerónimos Monastery, in Lisbon.
Mário Soares played an important role in the struggle for the redemocratization of Portugal and in the consolidation of the rule of law in the country after the "Carnation Revolution", of April 25th, 1974. He was President of the Republic for two consecutive terms (1986-1996), Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, a deputy in the Lower House and member of the European Parliament.
Still on April 10th, President Temer will hold a meeting with the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
