The Brazilian Government welcomes the acclamation by the United Nations General Assembly of Antonio Guterres as United Nations Secretary General, from January 1st 2017. Recognized for his experience and leading skills, Guterres will count on the support of Brazil to fulfill his mandate ahead of the Organization.
The selection process to choose the substitute of the current Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, represented commendable improvement regarding the tradition on the choice of the highest office of the Organization. It was marked by more transparency and engagement of the General Assembly. The significant participation of women candidates, including from our region, is also an auspicious fact.
While reiterating the wishes for every success to the new United Nations Secretary General, the Brazilian Government reaffirms its willingness to continue contributing to the efforts of the Organization in facing the major global challenges.
