The Brazilian Government received with great satisfaction the announcement by the Presidency of the Security Council that António Guterres will be recommended by the body for the post of next United Nations Secretary General, succeeding Ban Ki-Moon, whose mandate ends next December 31.

Former Prime Minister of Portugal and former United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres has incontestable professional skills and  political stature to lead the United Nations in addressing the multiple global challenges, in conducting the necessary reform of the Organization, including of its Security Council, and in efforts to promote peace, sustainable development and human rights.

In congratulating António Guterres, the people and the Government of Portugal for the announcement, Brazil expresses its willingness to fully cooperate with the work of the next Secretary General of the United Nations.
