The Brazilian government celebrates the announcement of writer Raduan Nassar as the winner of the 2016 Camões prize for literature. Created in 1988 by Brazil and Portugal, the Camões prize is considered the most distinguished literary award given to Portuguese-language writers.

Nassar, the author of Lavoura arcaica and Um Copo de Cólera, is the 12th Brazilian writer to win this prestigious prize, which has been awarded to Ferreira Gullar, Lygia Fagundes Telles, and, among others, diplomats Alberto da Costa e Silva and João Cabral de Melo Neto.
