The First Meeting of the Mechanism of Political Consultations Brazil-League of Arab States will be held in Brasilia tomorrow, April 28. The Brazilian delegation will be led by the Undersecretary General responsible for Africa and the Middle East at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Fernando José Marroni de Abreu, and the delegation of the Arab League will be headed by Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs, Ambassador Fadel Jawad Kadhum.
In recent years, the Brazilian Government has been looking to increase multisectoral cooperation with the League in addition to deepen bilateral political dialogue with its 22 members. The first meeting takes place less than one year after the signature, on the sidelines of the 70th United Nations General Assembly, of the Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of Cooperation and Political Consultations, which aims to address international, regional and bilateral matters of common interest.
The headquarters of the Permanent Mission to the Arab League in Brasilia was reopened in 2009. Since March 2014, the Ambassador of Brazil to Egypt has also been accredited as Special Representative for the League of Arab States.
Trade between Brazil and the Arab countries reached USD 19.2 billion in 2015.
