The Brazilian Government congratulates Ambassador Ahmed Aboul-Gueit, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt and former Permanent Representative of Egypt to the United Nations, for his election for the position of Secretary General of the League of Arab States (LAS), on March 10, 2016.
Brazil's relations with the Arab League and its members are reflected on the significant trade exchange with the Arab countries, which reached USD 19.2 billion in 2015. In recent years, the Brazilian Government has sought to deepen bilateral relations and increase cooperation with the League.
The LAS Permanent Mission in Brasilia was reopened in 2009. Since March 2014, the Ambassador of Brazil to Egypt is formally accredited by the Council of the League as Special Representative to the LAS. In 2015, parallel to the 70th UN General Assembly, Brazil and LAS signed a Memorandum for the Establishment of Cooperation and Political Consultations.
