Brazil welcomed with satisfaction the adoption of Resolution 2268 (2016), of the United Nations Security Council, which endorsed the Joint Statement of the Co-chairs of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) on the cessation of hostilities in that country beginning at 0:00 a.m. today, February 27.

The Brazilian Government highlights the importance that the terms of the agreement be strictly adhered to by all parties involved.

Brazil has reiterated its support to a political solution to the conflict in Syria, to be achieved through dialogue and reconciliation between the Syrian sectors recognized as reputable – which excludes terrorist groups – , and hopes that the cessation of hostilities contributes to give new momentum to the implementation of the political process outlined by Resolution 2254 (2015).

By emphasizing the importance of ensuring immediate and unimpeded access of humanitarian assistance to the areas affected by the conflict in Syria, the Brazilian Government reiterates its willingness to continue supporting international efforts to mitigate the humanitarian crises devastating the country.
