The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mauro Vieira, will participate in the Supporting Syria and the Region Conference, in London on February 4. Representatives from eighty countries, besides Brazil, and several international organizations, have been invited to the meeting.
The United Kingdom, Germany, Norway and Kuwait, with the support of the United Nations, will co-host the conference, which aims at raising significant funding to guarantee assistance to the population in Syria and its neighbouring countries, so as to meet their emergency needs and provide jobs and education opportunities.
The Brazilian participation in the conference represents the renewal of its solidarity to the people of Syria and the neighbouring countries. Brazil has been present in the three previous conferences in support of Syria and the region, hosted by Kuwait in 2013, 2014 and 2015, when it offered donations through UNHCR and UNICEF. In 2015, the Brazilian Government extended for another two years its humanitarian visa policy for the benefit of the people affected by the conflict in Syria. Brazil has so far hosted over two thousand refugees of Syrian nationality.
At the conference in London, Brazil will reiterate its willingness to donate food to Syria and neighbouring countries, in addition to announcing its financial contribution to UNHCR to promote actions of assistance and protection of the refugees. It will also reaffirm its support to the efforts of the UN Secretary General Special Envoy for Syria to seek a pacific solution to the conflict.
