Following the death of Sergeant Rodrigo Andrés Sanhueza Soto on April 13, killed by gunfire while on patrol as part of his duties in Haiti, the Brazilian Government expresses its great sorrow to the people and Government of Chile, as well as to the soldier’s family.

Sergeant Sanhueza Soto was part of the Chilean contingent of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). The mission – in which Brazil has participated since its inception in 2004, providing the largest military contingent – has the primary mandate of supporting the Haitian Government in maintaining security and stability in the country.

The Brazilian Government reiterates the need to ensure the physical integrity of the “blue helmets”, wherever in the world they are carrying out their mission.
