On the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, observed on November 29, President Dilma Rousseff sent the following message to the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon:

"In the context of celebrations, by the International Community, of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, the Brazilian Government reiterates its full support to the legitimate right to self-determination of the Palestinian people.

Brazil, which formally recognized the State of Palestine in 2010, remains committed with the establishment of an economically viable, territorially contiguous and sovereign Palestine State, with its capital in East Jerusalem, living side by side, in peace and security, with Israel, based on the internationally recognized borders of 1967, in accordance with the International Law and pertinent UN Resolutions.

Brazil follows with concern the recent upsurge of violence against Palestinian and Israeli civilians. The expansion of illegal settlements and the attacks inspired by hatred and religious extremism constitute serious obstacles to the two-State solution and, therefore, to lasting peace in the region.

The lack of a peaceful solution to the Palestine issue remains a threat to international peace and security. Concrete steps to promptly reach the two-State solution must be taken, in order to break the vicious circle of violence. Both parties should resume negotiations in good faith, based on the principles and parameters established by international law and relevant UN Resolutions.

Brazil will continue to support the efforts for achieving a fair and durable peace in Palestine, based on the two-State solution and in the realization of the inalienable right to self-determination of the Palestinian people.
