The Brazilian government welcomes the undertaking of the first round of legislative elections in Haiti, on August 9, and congratulates the Haitian people for participating in the process.
The Brazilian government deplores the incidents that caused losses of lives and interruption of voting in some electoral zone while acknowledging the efforts of the Haitian Government, the Provisional Electoral Council, and the National Haitian Police. The Brazilian Government maintains, along with the international community, expectations that Haiti’s competent authorities investigate the events and take those responsible to courts.
The Brazilian Government exhorts all political players to pacifically wait for the results from the first round, respecting the guidelines and schedule established by the competent Haitian institutions.
The Brazilian Government congratulates the work carried out by the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), whose military component is currently under the command of Brazilian Lieutenant General Jose Luiz Jaborandy, Jr., in which 982 Brazilian military men and 8 police officers take part.
The Brazilian Government reiterates its support to the Haitian Government in carrying out the other stages of the electoral process, which are essential for the country’s democratic consolidation.
