Today, August 6, marks the 70th anniversary of the first nuclear attack in history, against the City of Hiroshima, Japan. The Government and the people of Brazil pay homage to the memory of the thousands of victims of nuclear bombs.

While recalling the terrible consequences of nuclear explosions and expressing its hope that never again human beings are victims of such weapons, Brazil reaffirms its conviction that the only path to attain such objective is to free the world of all nuclear arsenals.

The Brazilian government renews, thus, the call on countries possessing nuclear weapons to demonstrate real political will and to engage in negotiations on a legally binding instrument that ensures the prohibition and the irreversible elimination of those arsenals.
